RIP Gary Gygax, 1938-2008
Gary Gygax, he of the coolest surname ever, has passed on, after leaving the world with Dungeons & Dragons and its myriad progeny.
I know a whole family in Bakersfield who are going to mark his passing, I'll wager.
RIP, dude. Thanks for keeping legions of geeks off the streets and doing fun stuff, and introducing folks to D20's and dice tables.
First
published in 1974, the Dungeons & Dragons game, in which players
create magical and heroic characters and guide them through a series of
adventures, soon became a cultural phenomenon.
There was no game board in this interactive, imaginative adventure: just paper, pen, the dungeon master's rule book and a set of multisided dice.
D&D spawned a booming industry and has inspired a generation of writers, video game designers and filmmakers.
