Barack Obama Press Conference as Interpreted by Wuzzadem: A Gentle Poke with a Sharp Stick
The good people at Wuzzadem are no doubt more uncomfortable with This Administration than I, and no doubt Mrs. R crafted this photo essay / cartoon with a harder edge than I choose to use, but here is a nicely-made bit of satire that finally (for me) captures Mr. Obama's fine communication skills, including his ability to "read the phone book" while making it sound profound or compelling or pregnant with meaning:
REPORTER: Mr. President, how do you respond to critics who say that the Democratic stimulus package is laden with pork and, therefore, actually bad for the economy?
OBAMA: Look...Stuff that is bad for the economy is not good for the economy.
And, conversely, stuff that is good for the economy is not bad for the economy.
This we know.
We also know that being polite to someone is the opposite of being rude to someone, and vice versa. And most of us, myself included, would rather be treated politely, treat others politely.
Why? Because treating others politely, being treated politely by others, makes the world a better place for everyone, and that includes Republicans as well as Democrats.
That said, there are other aspects of our lives that aren't so easy to sort out...
Like what constitutes 'pork' and what doesn't constitute 'pork'. And that appears to be a matter of opinion, as are most of the tough issues we face. But that doesn't mean these differences of opinion can't be resolved.
Let me give you an example...
I don't want to give the tail end of the fictional Obama's reply away, but it had me in stitches.
And, I think one can enjoy the bit while being a fan of Mr. Obama as well. This I know. For I am — as of now — a fan of Mr. Obama, and awaiting with interest to see how the first few months of His Administration (almost none of his cabinet are choices I would have made) turn out.
I still think — despite his experience, despite his background — that since he is a smart guy and a relatively empty suit that the potential for greatness is there, depending on how he fills the suit. Additionally, in many people's eyes, he just has to "not suck," after following up the Eevil Bush-n-Cheney, so that gives him an inside edge on leadership.
That said, Mrs. R's piece humorously skewers the president's off-the-cuff speechifying nicely. I give it 10-out-of-10.
